Thunder in the City
The 2026 Thunder in the City powerboat event will return to the Upper Chesapeake Bay July 31 through August 2, 2026. The 22nd annual event is centered around Chesapeake City, Maryland, with Chesapeake Inn serving as a major host location for the weekend’s check-in, dining, dock party, awards, and evening entertainment.
The weekend begins Friday with event check-in scheduled from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., followed by the annual Friday dock party. This year’s Friday entertainment includes a performance by DECADE 80’s Band on the deck, along with a sponsor VIP cocktail and dinner party later that evening on the terrace.
Saturday’s schedule includes breakfast at Chesapeake Inn before boaters head out for the day’s organized course, checkpoint stops, and lunch. The registration page notes that the lunch location and afternoon dock bar party location are still to be announced.
The Saturday evening portion of the event returns to the Chesapeake Inn Ballroom, where participants will gather for dinner, hors d’oeuvres, individual boater awards, poker card hands, and music from DJ Jimmy T. Organizers list up to $5,000 in prize money for the weekend.
Registration for the captain and mate package starts at $950 through June 14, 2026. The price increases to $1,000 on June 15 and $1,050 on July 15. The package includes captain and mate entry, two nights of boat slip dockage, Friday dock party access, Saturday breakfast, lunch, evening dinner party access, poker hands, two event shirts, a captain gift, and sponsor items.
Additional riders must purchase a separate rider package. Early bird rider registration is listed at $375 through June 14, 2026, increasing to $400 on June 15. Organizers state that all riders on registered boats must be paid and registered, confirmed at check-in, and required to sign a waiver.
Safety is emphasized throughout the event information. Thunder in the City states that the event is not a race and that participants are expected to follow U.S. Coast Guard Rules of the Road and regulations. Captains will receive safety information at check-in, including links and QR codes related to USCG rules.
A separate Thursday night kickoff party is also listed at Chesapeake Inn on July 30, 2026, though organizers note that it is optional and not part of the official Thunder in the City event. Registered attendees will receive discount information for the party and Thursday night dockage.
