The Chicago Scene Boat Party is scheduled for Saturday, July 25, 2026, on Lake Michigan, bringing together hundreds of boats and thousands of attendees for what has become one of the largest and most recognizable boating gatherings in Chicago. Centered around the famous Playpen anchorage area near Ohio Street Beach, the annual event continues to define Chicago’s summer boating culture with massive raft-ups, DJs, luxury boats, skyline views, and all-day floating parties along the downtown lakefront.

Now entering its 26th year, the Chicago Scene Boat Party was originally founded in 2001 by Ted Widen after a small group of friends tied up boats together in the Playpen with DJs performing from a single flybridge. What began as a modest gathering quickly exploded into one of the Midwest’s biggest boating weekends, regularly drawing between 500 and 1,000 boats and crowds estimated at more than 10,000 attendees.

The 2026 event officially runs from noon until approximately 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the Playpen near Ohio Street Beach, with additional pre-parties, after-parties, marina gatherings, and nightlife events scheduled throughout the weekend.

Organizers describe the event as the “most talked-about powerboating event of the summer in Chicago,” featuring:

The event has become so large that organizers now require mandatory registration for every participating vessel due to increased oversight from federal and local marine authorities. According to the official Chicago Scene Boat Party website, all boats must:

  • Register in advance
  • Purchase and display the official event flag
  • Provide vessel and passenger information
  • Comply with organized marine event regulations established for large boating gatherings.

Organizers stated that the registration and flag system helps law enforcement and safety personnel identify participating vessels while tracking the number of boats and passengers involved in the event.

The Chicago Scene Boat Party remains heavily associated with the Playpen — Chicago’s iconic offshore anchorage zone just north of Navy Pier — where boats raft together in shallow protected water while crews swim, socialize, and enjoy music throughout the afternoon. The event regularly attracts everything from center consoles and wake boats to large express cruisers, performance catamarans, luxury yachts, and charter boats from across the Midwest Great Lakes region.

Over the years, the Chicago Scene Boat Party has received national media attention from publications including The New York Times, Chicago Magazine, Motor Boating Magazine, and the Chicago Sun-Times, which famously referred to the gathering as “A Floating Mardi Gras.”

The event also plays a major role in Chicago’s increasingly active boating festival calendar, joining weekends such as Black Yacht Weekend, Air & Water Show gatherings, and other large-scale Playpen boating events throughout the summer season.
